To Inhabit is an investigative journey to alternative futures of energy production.
Our society is now at a crossroads. The actions resulted from the policy makers’ acceptance or denial of human caused climate change will greatly impact the landscapes: whether we continue down the path of fossil fuel-based energy or we switch to renewables such as wind energy, no path is entirely free of impacts. The proposed installation, To Inhabit, brings to light these impacts.
This multi-media presentation that includes lenticular prints, videos and soundscapes allows the viewers to experience these futures.
Lenticular Prints
Lenticular prints combine the qualities of photography and video as multiple frames are embedded into one object. When the viewer moves around the print, the image animates from the current environment into future possibilities. This introduces the element of time into the images and encourages viewer participation.
These lenticular prints are portals for time travel, transporting us from familiar landmarks, such as New York’s Time Square or our own Pleasure Pier at Galveston, to a different point of time when human impacts render them How will these places look if the sea rises 80 feet as projected in the worst case scenario of unabated climate change? If we successfully divert that catastrophe and our energy needs are being met by wind rather than by coal, what will a world littered with wind turbines look like? By making a step left or a step right while in front of these prints, the viewer travels in time to these alternative futures, visualizing our world decades from now.
The demo videos here emulate the effect of these lenticular prints the best they can on a computer display.
